Now this might sound like an eposode of 'flash' or 'star trek' but it actually did happen. This is the first time an object has been teleported into orbit(out of the earth).
So far, teleportations have already been performed successfully in labs on earth, but the distance of the previous teleportation was limited, partly because of photons interacting with atmospheric matter.
Chinese researchers have managed to teleport a photon up to new satellite 'micius', over 500Km above the ground.
This sudden progress in teleportation captured alot of interest around the world. Can you imagine the possibilites of putting complex information into the far reaches of space.
Let's be clear about what was done here; the very process of teleportation didn't involve moving the photon(objects) in actual physical sense.
What_was_done was to send information Via a quantum physical phenomenon known as "Quantum Entanglement" — a process where two particles act as one without sharing any physical connection whatsoever.
In this way, information can be sent from earth to orbit about a speed of light in a way that can only be accessed by two observers.
Ian Walmsley, Professor of Experimental Physics at Oxford University gave the following explanation:
How it works, its really communicating information in a way that harnesses quantum mechanics. So they have information in one photon that they have on earth and a second photon that is up in the satellite and they are able to transfer the information from one to another.
To make this whole ‘quantum entanglement’ understandable…
Basically, the second photon adopts the ‘identity’ of the first photon, as information is passed from one to the other. In the end, this second photon becomes the first photon. It’s quite similar to the way downloads work…
The good thing about this breakthrough is that it will bring exciting developments. Professor Walmsley also said that the new technology has the potential to create an entire cloud based quantum computing network, that will allow further developments in secure long distance communications.
The teleportation breakthrough will also help China solidify as a major (influential) player in the tech industry.
